The Angel Inn Hetton is much more than a country pub with rooms. The quality of the food, the comfort of the accommodation and the thought that goes into ensuring guests are made to feel special combined to make this a delightful place to stay.
The experience started well. Simon gave us the most enthusiastic welcome and took us to a spacious, comfortable and beautifully furnished room. We had lovely countryside views and a small terrace and garden to enjoy when served delicious canapés in our room at six o’ clock. These made a great start to the evening.
The Angel retains the character of a country pub and it has not developed pretentions that meant thankfully I was able to sup a pint of real local ale. It was excellent and enjoyed in a convivial atmosphere, impressive for mid-week.
After one of the best amuse bouche, we had the Angel’s Moneybag starter – scallops, prawn, salmon and smoked fish with a julienne of peppers and courgettes baked in a crispy pastry in an exquisite lobster sauce. We followed this with a generous rack of lamb cutlets to share.
Pascal Watkins, the Managing Director, has written a series of intriguing descriptions of each of their wines that made choosing the right bottle much more fun. We had a French Pinot Noir that was perfect with the lamb.
He wants to ensure that that The Angel is not only used for special occasions, though it is great for those, but also for when visitors or locals simply want good food at reasonable prices. He certainly seems to be achieving this in Hetton.
The Angel made a perfect base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. There were books and guides in our rooms that ensured we were fully prepared for the day ahead. The Dales are on its doorstep and we felt we were excellently placed to take advantage without any need to rush or to drive long distances.
We left fully rested and with the most marvelous breakfast to sustain us for some serious walking and spectacular scenery. Don’t skip breakfast and do have the scrambled eggs!
It was very difficult to categorise The Angel. My wife described it as “high quality hotel masquerading as a pub.” We like pubs and hotels and at The Angel we enjoyed the best of both.
