With 2017 marking 800 years since the Battle of Lincoln, one of the most influential events in England’s history, we visit this beautiful city ahead of the historic summer events being planned in Lincoln to mark the occasion.
1 DISCOVER THE HISTORY The Battle of Lincoln took place between two of Lincoln’s architectural gems: Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle. You can explore the Medieval castle and see one of only four surviving copies of Magna Carta, then climb the tower of Lincoln Cathedral for a real experience of English history.
2 THE BATTLE OF LINCOLN ANNIVERSARY Mark the 800th anniversary (20 May) by joining in with one of the events taking place – including a procession, fun at the castle, and a faithful re-enactment of the 1217 Battle of Lincoln on Castle Hill and Minster Yard outside Lincoln Cathedral from 2pm.
3 SHOPPING IN STEEP HILL AND THE STRAIT
Voted as ‘Britain’s Best Street’, Steep Hill connects ‘downhill’ and ‘uphill’ Lincoln. Yes, it is steep, as its name suggests, but well worth the walk! Within these lovely old streets you’ll find a wide variety of independent and specialty shops, a lot of them housed in the oldest buildings of the city.
4 BRAYFORD WATERFRONT
England’s oldest inland harbour offering a great selection of eating, drinking and entertainment venues. It’s the perfect place to relax at a pavement café overlooking the water or the stunning University of Lincoln campus after a hard days shopping!
5 LINCOLN SAUSAGES!
Lincolnshire is famous for its food – in particular the Lincolnshire Sausage, which is a must! There are plenty of opportunities to eat and drink well in Lincoln, especially during the summer when their Farmers’ Markets will be running throughout – on High Street and Castle Square.
6 FIND A HIDDEN GEM
Lincoln’s vintage shops and antique centres are perfect for specialist shopping to find a unique piece for your home or gift for a loved one. We recommend a must-visit to Hemswell Antique Centres (find out more click here), which offers Europe’s largest selection of dealers. (hemswell-antiques.com)
